Building commitment, stimulating action

Through the commitment of the Signatories and the active participation of our partner organizations, Carers Canada is building and supporting a network that will ignite change and shape the future for carers across Canada and around the world. Together, we are committed to:

  • Embracing a citizen-centred approach to identify and respond to the needs of carers.
  • Collaborating with organizations, caregiver networks and governments to stimulate action.
  • Incorporating the best available evidence, expertise and experience in all decisions.

Carer priorities across Canada

The Caregiver Strategy or Manifesto articulates the universal priorities that caregivers and caregiver support groups have identified. Launched in 2008 and updated in 2014, the Manifesto provides a foundation to facilitate a collaborative action plan and ensure carers have a voice in policy, programming and services.

The following five priority areas set the framework for our work:

  • Safeguard the health and well-being of carers.
  • Minimize the financial burden placed on family carers.
  • Enable access to user friendly information and education.
  • Create flexible workplace/educational environments that respect caregiving obligations.
  • Invest in research on unpaid caregiving as a foundation for evidence-informed decision making.

A Canadian Carer Strategy

Significant gains have been made on developing legislations, policy and programs to better meet the needs of family caregivers, also known as carers. A collaboration of Carers Canada, the Canadian Home Care Association and the Canadian Cancer Action Network, the report outlines the policies and practice initiatives that support carers across the country.  In doing so, we aim to identify opportunities for broader pan-Canadian collaboration and build on each other’s efforts to achieve measurable outcomes and values for patients, carers and our society as a whole.

An integrated action plan to affect real change

Mobilizing Action: Family Caregivers in Canada is an integrated and shared plan to address the physical, psychosocial, and financial needs of family givers. The collaborative actions included in the plan advance four key areas:

  1. Enhance awareness of caregiver needs and facilitate their voice in the care provision and the health care system.
  2. Improve access to caregiver support services and patient care resources.
  3. Alleviate the financial burden placed on family caregivers.
  4. Create supportive workplaces that recognize caregiving obligations.

The plan serves as a blueprint for coordinated actions to support carer and affect real change.

Mobilizing Action builds on numerous initiatives and leverages the commitment and momentum of over sixty organizations across Canada. The catalyst and frame for the plan evolved from a number of seminal reports:
